The statue depicts a giraffe from Gambia. It was made in 2012 with thick woods.
The hunters and the gradual decline of forests as a result of drought and traditional cooking with charcoal, were due to the disappearance of many animals in The Gambia. The last giraffe drowned in 1899, the last elephant was massacred in 1913. Then the hunters have removed the giant eland, buffalo wild, waterbuck and antelopes.
Today, there are hundreds of hippos, gazelles, deer, servals, warthogs, varans and lots of monkeys. But large animals are less numerous.
