Product information "Dan Mask"

This art object is a Dan mask of Ivory Coast. It was made in 2007 with hardwood dyed in black and decorated with raffia and cowrie shells.

In the west of the country, in the region of Man and Touba, the Dan are creators of a particular mask style: ovoid and sometimes decorated with cowrie shells.

There are two uses for masks: those who belong to a higher or lower rank in the hierarchy of Poro. These masks are feared (the mask always having a particular religious or social character) and those who are used in the entertainment community (monkey mask playing the role of jester, judge mask, policeman, eater of rice, etc..).

Dan: "Mother masks" worn by dancers mounted on large stilts. This mask is a very pure oval, figure idealized female face, forehead slightly curved, straight nose, sensitive thin lips, eyes half closed in almond, giving an expression of serenity and dark black patina always beautiful and obtained by a mud bath.

This mask type, of a wide variety, symbolizes the primordial Mother and fecund which soothes disputes, protects pregnant women and newborns.
