This art object is a Yoruba mask of Benin. It was made in 2002 with kola wood.
The masks are sculpted by artists using a cylindrical piece of wood and painted in polychrome.
Most masks have common features to the Yoruba works such as almond-shaped eyes and three short scarifications on the cheeks or forehead which are held in high esteem by the Yoruba.
The mask consists of two parts. The lower part represents a quiet woman's face in simple and static conventional form. The upper part is rather lively and complex due to the creativity of the artist. It symbolizes the inner powers of women.
